Before I heard this masterful CD, when someone mentioned the ukulele, I thought of Tiny Tim tiptoeing through the tulips. Now that I've heard Jake Shimabukuro, I have fallen head over heels in love not only with the ukulele but also with his musical artistry.
Jake has been called a uke phenom and virtuoso in his short career, so it's no surprise that Alan Parsons (of The Beatles' ''Abbey Road'' fame) sought him out and produced this CD.
While there are several covers you will recognize –- ''Over the Rainbow,'' ''Rolling in the Deep,'' and ''Fields of Gold'' –- it's Jake's original work that brings me joy with every note. He taps into classical, blues, flamenco, surf rock, rockabilly, and even transforms the ukulele to mimic a music box.
While some songs are ukulele only, others add the beauty of violin, cello, bass, flute, oboe, and French horn. I don't know why, but his music makes me smile –- maybe because it is so upbeat, irresistible, and fun. Everyone who hears it loves it, and I hope you do too!
