Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. How is the AeroPress® Coffee and Espresso Maker different from a French press coffee maker?

A. While both presses involve manually pressing the coffee through a filter to remove the coffee grounds, there are many ways the presses are different.

1. The AeroPress uses a small paper filter while a French press uses a metal filter. Because of this difference in filters, the AeroPress can use finely ground coffee, while you must use coarsely ground coffee in a French press. Finely ground coffee has much more surface area than coarsely ground coffee so the brew time with an AeroPress is only about 30 seconds while the brew time with a French press is four to five minutes. Rapid brew time yields rich, smooth tasting coffee without bitterness. The long brew time required for the French press causes over-extraction on the surface of the coffee grounds which produces rich but bitter tasting coffee.

2. The longer brew time required for a French press brews coffee much higher in acidity.

3. Even if you use coarsely ground coffee, the metal filter of a French press passes some of the coffee grounds into the coffee, resulting in some "grit" in the bottom of your cup. Most people consider this grit unpleasant when they drink down to the bottom of the cup. These “grit” coffee grounds continue brewing in the cup, which further increases the bitterness. The AeroPress produces a grit-free cup of coffee.

4. The AeroPress can be used to make conventional American-style coffee or shots of espresso-style coffee, which means you can make lattes, cappuccinos, and many other espresso-based drinks. A French press can only make American-style coffee.

5. Paper filters used in many types of coffee makers including the AeroPress remove chemicals called diterpines from coffee. Medical research has shown that the diterpines in coffee are potent agents for raising your low density lipoproteins (also called LDL or bad cholesterol). The metal filter in a French press does not remove these diterpines and therefore its use may increase the bad cholesterol of its user.

Q. Does the cup in the photo with the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker come with it?

A. No, the cup is not included.

This is an amazing coffeemaker. My sons are major coffee snobs and they said the Aeropress makes the best coffee they've ever had. It's such a simple design - it's a breeze to use and clean up only takes seconds. What's not to like? Highly recommend!!!

Got one for my sister in law who is really into coffee these days and she loves it. Says the coffee is smoother and not acidic, much better than from her French press which was her favorite previously.

I absolutely love my Aero Press! I was afraid that it would be difficult to use because of some reviews but it is so easy, and the coffee is delicious. Now I don't want to use my Keurig anymore! I'm very glad I got this.

Based on a recommendation from a colleague who is a coffee yuppie, and purcahsed your Aero, I purchased the Aero as a birthday present for my wife Flat out winner. She loves it, makes great cup of coffee, is easy to use and clean.Thank you!

Easy to use, makes a great-tasting, smooth brew. My only issue is the dark color makes it difficult for me to see the water level. It is NOT transparent as shown in the photo.

By Good, but hard to use
First, ignore all of the hyperbole this device will most emphatically not revolutionize your coffee-drinking. It is a pretty good single-cup coffee maker for a relatively low price. It's physically difficult enough to use, though -- and the vague directions are no help -- that it generally takes three or four tries to push it down, with sufficient force that my rather frail mother could not use it at all. Why? Well, the vacuum seal. The video does not show this, but unless you get the plunger in JUST the right position, it won't go down more than fractions of an inch. By twisting the plunger, it's possible to find the right place. There's a distinctive hiss when it's hit the correct spot, but since that sound doesn't begin until well after you start pushing down, the can be trial and error. And being top-heavy, the whole shebang tips over easily, so do practice care while you're practicing. If a physics experiment isn't what you want when you first wake up in the morning, this might not be for you. I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't pretty strong (the directions' admonition to be gentle must be designed to protect the cup), or who would have trouble standing. (You need to be about a foot above the countertop to begin the pressing process.) If you're open to the experience and persistent, though, it does produce a nice cup of coffee. Plus, using it helps build the arm and chest muscles! One thing I wish the enclosed directions had mentioned before the very end the directions are to make a DOUBLE espresso, not an ordinary cup of coffee. Nice to know going in, I think. Also, please don't be mislead by the claims that this will make life-changing coffee. Any coffee maker is only as good as the coffee put into it. Use poor-quality coffee, and the results will be poor. I use good coffee, so I have been pleased. However, on the third or fourth try to push the plunger down on a day that's already not going well, it does bug me to recall all of the hype. Since I'm not really a person who remembers advertising, that should tell you how much work this can be.

Originally purchased for my daughter who had downsized and no longer had room for her espresso machine, I was delighted when she told me how much she liked her AeroPress. Since then I have gotten one for myself, given it to a number of others, and my family jokes that I should get a commission for the number of people who have returned home and purchased one after tasting the results when visiting us.

I bought this for a trip so I could have decent coffee en route (I'm driving), but since I haven't left yet, I haven't truly put this coffee maker through its paces. I tried it twice and it seems easy to use and clean and makes good coffee. Perhaps I can do an update in a month's time.

I agree with many of the reviews that it does make good coffee. But...unlike an espresso maker, you have to add hot water and then if you want to make a latte type beverage, you need to heat the milk up too. SO it's a lot of steps to coordinate before I have actually had my coffee...know what I mean. The quality of the press is five star

The holder should be enclosed so it stores without draining on the counter. I didn't find the cup of coffee to be that extraordinary but I will keep it to use in the motor home because it is a fresher tasting cup of coffee than a typical travel coffee maker.

This is my second one of these -- the rubber plunger does wear out eventually. I love the coffee, though. The only thing I wish I knew is whether or not the plastic is BPA freeI am concerned about warm plastic leaching stuff I dont want into my coffee and then into my body. If it is good plastic, it might help people to include that in the item description. Thanks.

I bought this for my husband as he only drinks one to three cups of coffee per day. This lets him always have fresh and it is very easy and convenient for him. He loves it. The only negative I would give it is that the directions for use are almost nonexistent, and it doesn't clean itself! LOL

This is a good product. It makes good coffee, but, I wouldn't quite call it espresso. It also requires a lot of coffee to get the near espresso flavor. It is easy to use - as long as you are patient and don't try to force the plunger down quickly. It only takes about 3 - 5 minutes to use.

Absolutely perfect, as far as I'm concerned. This is easier for me to use than the expensive espresso maker I had before. I build custom furniture. My shop is 100 feet from the house. When I need a break, I just heat a little water on the stove, grind espresso beans, put filter in, add water, press and I'm good to go. Love this thing!

I made one cup of coffee with this and decided to return it. Reading the description, it sounded like it would be so fantastic, but it wasn't and the instructions were way more complicated than a good cup of coffee requires. Also, it makes only one cup at a time. . .

They told me that they had one like it already but that I didn't need to return it, they would use both a few days later I received an email from my sister in law saying that she loved the one I gave them. It was way easier to use and she loved it. A great gift to yourself or any coffee drinkers you know!

Fantastic product! So easy to use and makes a delicious cup of coffee. And great for the wallet--when I think of the all the money I've spent on lattes at my local coffee shop or the behemoth of the coffee shops, I sorely wish I'd discovered the Aeropress earlier. Oh, well, no sense lamenting the past. With the Aeropress and my stainless steel frother, I can now make delicious almond milk lattes at home and enjoy them in the serenity of my own kitchen. I highly recommend this product. . .

I bought the AeroPress based on a review on a coffee site regarding a different coffee maker. I ordered it and the reviewer was correct. It makes very smooth "clean" coffee or espresso every time. The difference between the AeroPress and a french press in my opinion is the following: A french press works by the same method as the AeroPress but the AeroPress has an extremely fine filter and the rubber gasket on the plunger is about 99.999 air and watertight making the plunging action pressure very strong, almost like the pressure on an electric machine. The first time I tried it I thought I was doing something wrong because it required a little elbow grease to plunge. Just follow the directions exactly and if you love coffee as much as I do, you'll be very satisfied with the result. Since my niece and nephew are both young and also love coffee I intend to purchase one for each of them. For the price you can't go wrong.

I bought this coffee maker for my husband, the coffee drinker in our family. He LOVES it! Says it's the fastest way to make a great cup of coffee. It is lightweight, easy to clean, and portable. The grounds just pop out in one big clump so you don't have a mess. The small paper filter is re-usable and after as many as 5 uses, he says the coffee still tastes great. The only downside is that it takes a little bit of muscle to push the plunger down all the way. This may not be the coffee maker for the elderly or anyone lacking upper body strength.

I've only had the espresso maker for about two months and find that it makes an exceptionally good cup of coffee. I have used a French Press for many years and like this better, if for nothing because I don't have the deposits at the bottom of my cup. How long this lasts remains to be seen. I can't imagine it lasting years and years like a French Press, given the plastic components and rubber seal in the press. However, for now, I am very satisfied with this device.

Every member of my family now owns one of these gems. It consistently makes the best coffee I've had -- and since you make it one perfect cup at a time, you don't have coffee sitting around in a pot and getting old. By the way, it makes great coffee for iced coffee. Just brew a cup as strong as you like, then pour it over ice. Smooth and delicious. Great product. Thank you!

We received our AeroPress from a good friend, and I have been using it twice a day. I'm not a coffee drinker normally I will have a mocha every now and then but I'm hooked now!! I brought it to work and have been enjoying making coffee for a few of my co-workers that use a french press coffee thing in our conference room and now they love it also cause there are no grounds in their coffee. The best present anyone could give to anyone!!

OK, so all the raving is true. It's super fresh, strong and easy to make JUST the amount you need. The BEST coffee we have ever made. Beats the French press hands down. My husband does 2 pours and lets the first one drain through for more caffeine, and I do the classic method of stir and press for more of an espresso.

Making a cup of coffee with the AeroPress really is as simple as the video shows, and the coffee tastes better than that made with a French press. A simple rinse is all it needs to clean, and it's virtually maintenance free. The cup shown does not come with it, but it works with most coffee cups.

I'll confess to being addicted to a good strong brew in the early morning, and have tried every contraption out there - short of investing thousands espresso isn't THAT important. The Aeropress is very well-designed. The feature I like best is the easy-to-dispose-of filter, which also removes some of the acids. Sprinkling a little cinnamon on top will balance the rest - see the catalog for a great variety.

This is the best coffee "machine" I have ever owned. I donated my french press to Goodwill after purchasing the AeroPress. I finally ordered it after debating about buying another gadget for a year. I am so glad I did. Order this, you will love it. The coffee is smooth and the cleanup is a snap. I have reused the filters 3 times before disposing of them.

You will have the best coffee and espresso in town if you own an AeroPress®. My expensive cappuccino maker is going on CraigsList now that I've got this coffee and espresso maker. My friends know what a coffee snob I am, but I'm here to tell you -- drinking coffee made with this press is a spiritual experience. Read more...

It makes the smoothest, richest brews I've ever had in my life, and it's now difficult for me to drink anything else!

Although it is a press, it works very differently from a French Press. For one thing, French presses cannot make espressos or lattes. Just put a scoopful of your favorite coffee in the bottom, pour hot water in the top, and press the plunger. Within seconds, you've got a perfect cup of coffee or espresso, and it literally only takes seconds to clean (just pop the grounds and filter into the trash, and rinse the plunger).

Each AeroPress® comes with 350 filters and you can make 1-4 cups of coffee or espresso with each ''batch.'' Cappuccinos are my drink of choice, so I bought an inexpensive battery-powered milk frother that makes wonderful foam for my drinks. I now reside in perfect coffee heaven, and because the AeroPress® is so portable, I even travel with it.
