Mr. Hatch's Brownies!

From Eileen Spinelli

Our copier nearly blew a fuse when author Eileen Spinelli sent us her recipe for Mr. Hatch's Brownies. She originally acquired this decadent recipe from Dan Darigan, a teacher of Children's Literature. 1 cup butter
4 oz unsweetened chocolate
1-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1-1/2 tsp salt (I use 1 tsp.)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs (beaten)
1/4 cup corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla
a bit of peppermint extract
1 cup walnuts
2 cups chocolate chips

Melt butter and chocolate. Cool. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. Add next four ingredients and mix well. Add nuts and chips and pour into a 9" x 13" pan. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean. Don't be fooled by melted chocolate chips. Cool. Cut into generous squares.
