Mr. Hatch's Brownies!

Our copier nearly blew a fuse when author Eileen Spinelli sent us her recipe for Mr. Hatch's Brownies. She originally acquired this decadent recipe from Dan Darigan, a teacher of Children's Literature. For those of you who are not yet acquainted with Ms. Spinelli's bestselling book, Sombody Loves You, Mr. Hatch, be sure to read our annotation by entering "MR. HATCH" in the Keyword Search!

1 cup butter
4 oz unsweetened chocolate
1-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1-1/2 tsp salt (I use 1 tsp.)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs (beaten)
1/4 cup corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla
a bit of peppermint extract
1 cup walnuts
2 cups chocolate chips


Melt butter and chocolate. Cool. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. Add next four ingredients and mix well. Add nuts and chips and pour into a 9" x 13" pan. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean. Don't be fooled by melted chocolate chips. Cool. Cut into generous squares.
