Late Summer 2013 - The Priceless Gift of Friendship

Dear Friends

Every so often I have the pleasure of getting together with some very dear ladies I worked with for many years. Sometimes we see each other every three months, sometimes it is six months or longer between visits, but every gathering feels as though no time has passed since we last saw each other. Our connection is as strong as if we were still spending every day together, even though it has been nearly twelve years since we did so.

It is so much fun to get caught up on each other's lives. On our last visit we looked at the stunning pictures Sandy took on a trip to Ireland with her sister, and oohed and aahed over a blue ribbon-winning quilt Jennifer made. We sipped coffee and nibbled on treats, reminisced over favorite and not-so favorite clients we remembered from our customer service days, and wondered about other co-workers we had lost touch with over the years. We giggled about the teen-age dramas a couple of us were living through with our children and wiped away tears of laughter after sharing some of our own teen-age exploits. We shed some sad tears for another friend dealing with illness and debilitating pain for which there seems to be no relief, although our feisty, lion-hearted friend will never give up or give in. Then we turned to laughter again at the exploits of the escape artist goat Cheryl's niece lives with. Yvonne couldn't make it this last visit, but that just means we'll get to share all these wonderful stories again, plus more about jobs and family, pets and vacations, accomplishments and disappointments.

Our visit was just a couple of hours, but in that time we strengthened a bond that grows stronger with each meeting. To be able to share hopes and dreams along with failures and missed opportunities without fear of judgment or condemnation is a gift beyond measure. To know there is a friend out there for you if you need her and who knows you are there for her, too, is a priceless treasure. My hope is that each of us will take the opportunity to share and grow with those we love. To laugh with abandon and cry until we are cleansed and then to laugh some more.
