**When we first saw talc listed as one of the ingredients in some of Lavera's makeup products, we were concerned. Wasn't talc toxic? How could Lavera, which has been cited as the ''greenest and most natural company in Europe,'' use any questionable ingredients?!

Here's what we found out:

Talc is a mineral produced by the mining of talc rocks. Talc came into the limelight back in the 60s and early 70s when companies were using low-grade talc that had been contaminated with asbestos. Ever since 1972, only cosmetic-grade talc has been allowed, and this talc has been tested and certified to be 100% safe. Lavera goes one step further and uses pharmaceutical-grade talc, which is the purest talc available. The air we breathe contains more asbestos than pharmaceutical-grade talc does. Most prescription tablets and many vitamins now use pharmaceutical-grade talc as filler, so many of us are ingesting pharmaceutical-grade talc on a daily basis without even knowing it!

It should also be noted that none of the concerns about talc has been about its use in makeup. Rather, the concern has been about people inhaling it in large concentrations, such as in talcum powder. What people don't take into consideration is that it is no more toxic than if you were to inhale a lot of powdered sugar or flour on a regular basis. It's not so much the ingredient that's toxic; it's the inhaling of large amounts that's the issue.

Lavera could have used cornstarch, but they chose not to. Because cornstarch is a food derivative instead of a mineral, Lavera would have had to include preservatives if they used it. Cornstarch (as well as rice powder) can support bacterial growth in pores, which talc does not, and it causes more allergic reactions than talc. There's also performance to take into consideration. Cornstarch is more apt to cake and stick to skin, whereas talc has better moisture resistance, stability, and texture. Perhaps most importantly, Lavera will not use any ingredient that has been genetically modified, and farmers and suppliers can no longer guarantee non-GMO corn, even if it is certified organic.

Because of these factors, we have gone from feeling concerned to feeling confident about offering cosmetics containing pharmaceutical-grade talc.

Canadian Shipping:
We ship all Canadian orders by air. Payment must be in U.S. funds. The order recipient will be responsible for any duty/custom charges when the package arrives in Canada. Air mail rates: Add 15% of your subtotal, with a $7.95 minimum charge.

International Shipping:

We hope to offer you international ordering online soon. If you are having your order shipped internationally, UPS requires that you include a phone number for them to contact for delivery information.

We ship international orders (except Canadian) via Air Express only. While this ensures your order will arrive very quickly (within one week), it is also very expensive. (Shipping generally begins at about $65.00 for a one pound package and goes up with weight.)

As an affordable alternative, many of our international customers have their orders shipped to a friend or relative in the U.S who will forward the orders on to them.

Sales Tax

We collect sales tax based on the "ship to" address of your order. We are required to collect sales tax in California, which is where we are located. If you're shipping to California, please include tax as follows:

Calculate 8.75% of the total of your merchandise.

We don't collect tax on gift certificates.

Sales Tax Exemption

We are required by law to collect sales tax on any orders going to California. If you are a tax-exempt organization, we need to have a copy of the Exemption Certificate issued to you by the State of California on file before you can order tax-free. You may either mail or fax (619-670-5203) us a copy of your certificate. We ask that you place your orders by mail, fax (619-670-5203) or phone. If you are ordering by phone, please call our customer service line, 1-888-481-6744, between 6am and 6pm Pacific time.

Return Policy

If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, simply return it within 4 months for a refund of the item price or an exchange for another item. For items returned after 4 months, we will give you a Chinaberry credit for the purchase price. On the back of your invoice, we provide you with a return form to complete. Please include it with your returned item(s). If an item is defective or if the order was filled incorrectly, we will send you a prepaid return label. If you have lost your return form, click here to print one out. We will do our best to handle the transaction quickly and in accordance with your wishes.
