Reading a book that helps me think about larger world issues is much more satisfying to me than reading some of the more appalling articles in the daily news. Julie and Romeo questions why one family is pitted against another in sabotage and revenge for many years. When Julie Roseman and Romeo Cacciamani run into each other, both are in their 60s, having been raised to absolutely hate anything and everything about each other's families. Julie starts to wonder why the families, who own rival flower shops in town, have hated each other for more than 50 years.
Julie's life experiences propel her to look at Romeo in a new light. Her ex-husband never treated her well, and after he left to take up with a much younger woman, Julie struggled to maintain the flower business her parents started years ago. While Julie and Romeo have each put aside this family vendetta, their families have not, and sparks fly, almost literally, when their families learn of the budding relationship. Of course, family feuds being what they are, things don't go so smoothly (think Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet), but they don't end quite so badly either.
