I was immediately drawn to this hip stretch bracelet. Its black-and-white bead caught my eye first. These are actually terra cotta clay beads dyed black. Craftswomen in Northeastern Thailand make the beads by hand because they live in an area with poor soil and unreliable rain. Since they can't work the land in the traditional way of planting, these industrious women take native clay, dye and shape it, and design one-of-a-kind beads.
Made individually and fired in back-yard kilns, these beads are part of a 600-year-old tradition and help support these hardworking artisans. With an eclectic assortment of chalcedony, yellow jasper, green jade, and the reddish-brown Buri beads, this stretchy bracelet seems to go with just about everything I wear, which is always a plus!
