A Year on the Fringes of a Shrinking World
Gayle Forman
While I've done my share of traveling, my ever-more-complicated life has been forcing me to satisfy my itch with tales of other people's travels. And I must admit, I am not easy to please. If I am going to spend my precious hours reading about someone else's trips, I want to really be surprised, to learn something, and to feel that I have ''expanded my horizons'' without leaving my house.
You Can't Get There from Here is an excellent book for just this sort of thing. Forman, a freelance journalist, embarks on a year-long, around-the-world trip with her husband that will take her to places that typically never make it onto even the most fearless traveler's itinerary. From transvestites in Tonga and hip-hop artists in Tanzania to role-playing Lord of the Rings fans in Kazakhstan, Forman introduced me to people who, even if I could manage to take my own trip around the world right now, I probably would never come into contact with.
