WATCH VIDEO OF THE AUTHOR AT WORK
I brake for articles and books about clutter since it's one of the crosses I apparently give myself to bear. Or so I thought. In the past, the most effective (for me) books about de-cluttering explained why clutter is so destructive, gave advice on what to part with, said to tackle something in your home every day, and presumably, life would be more simplified henceforward. I have to admit that these books worked for a couple of weeks, but then I'd run out of steam and make excuses about why the remaining stuff needed to stay exactly where it was.
This book is different. Instead of promising that many issues and problems in your life will dissolve once you de-clutter, it explains that clutter happens because of beliefs and unresolved issues. The author is a clutter busting coach and tells story after story of being called to homes of people who feel helpless to manage the job alone. Usually, it doesn't take too much to make the clutterers understand exactly why they've gotten into the situation. Usually, there is a release of emotion as Palmer guides them toward the necessary awareness, and following the release and the subsequent ''aha! moment,'' he can usually leave the clutterbug to tackle the clutter alone, with an energy, vigor, and direction not experienced in years, if ever.
The author asks the reader ample questions, giving you the same guidance he'd give if he were with you in person. Exercises pave the way toward deep work, self-knowledge, and understanding. By the time you've finished the book, you will understand that it is you who is sacred, not your things. This is a life-changing book.
