New Instrumental Music for Harps of Eight Centuries
Cheryl Ann Fulton
I love harp music and have collected many recordings over the years, but I have only just found out about Cheryl Ann Fulton. Her original solo work is a unique and richly creative contribution to the field of harp music. In fact, Fulton is America's premier performer of historical harps and one of the few harpists in the world to play triple harp, medieval harp, and contemporary lever harps.
The Once and Future Harp features five different kinds of harps: a Welsh triple harp made in 1850, three medieval lap harps, a folk harp, a viola da Gamba, and a psaltery. There are pieces for Winter Solstice/Christmas; an instrumental piece called ''Winter's Song,'' inspired by a poem written by a woman troubadour in the twelfth century; a piece inspired by the beauty of Alaska, called ''Native Spirit''; one dedicated to David Whyte, the poet; a Romanesca tune based on a 16th century piece, and more. All but one are original compositions of beauty.
I know I will be playing this CD for my holiday and year-round pleasure and sustenance, and I will be giving it to friends and family, too. It is music that enriches, nourishes, and delights the senses and soul.
