The Mindful Way Through Depression

Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness
Mark Williams, John Teasdale
Since being diagnosed with major depression ten years ago, I've experimented with everything but the kitchen sink to get it under control: anti-depressants, counseling, supplements, diet, exercise, acupuncture, neurofeedback, ECT -- you name it, and I have probably tried it with varying degrees of success and failure. At its worst, my depression is like a room that I can't get out of where everything I see, hear, touch, and feel is affected by the depression. At its best, it's like a chair in the room -- sometimes I find myself sitting down in it, but it doesn't define everything about me.
Lately, I've heard a lot about ''mindfulness'' as a way to treat this often debilitating illness. This eight-week audio course explores the Eastern practice of mindfulness coupled with the Western practice of cognitive therapy as a way to actually reduce depressive episodes, sometimes by up to 50%! This isn't a course you can ''power'' through in five hours, though. It guides you through the anatomy of depression and how mindfulness can be one of your strongest personal tools to detract it. (Listening to Mark Williams and his calming, strong British voice isn't so bad on the nerves either.) One of the most important things about moving forward in this course is acceptance -- accepting where you are now, what you are thinking and feeling, rather than what you think you should be thinking and feeling. It is amazing how much energy we waste on beating ourselves up! Learning mindfulness is proving to be extremely beneficial in dealing with my depression and I know it can do the same for you or someone you care about. (Note: This course does not take the place of seeking treatment for severe depression and it is not recommended while you are experiencing a depressive episode.)
