A Christmas Poem
Maya Angelou
Illustrated by Steve Johnsonr
Beloved poet Maya Angelou wrote this poem for the 2005 White House tree-lighting ceremony. Now it is a stunning picture book with remarkable acrylic, oil, and fabric collage paintings providing the perfect accompaniment to Angelou's moving words. The paintings tell a parallel story of a young family braving the winter ice and cold to attend a multicultural holiday gathering where Christians, Jews, Jainists, Muslims, and more all come together to light candles and celebrate the season, the gifts of community, and the possibility of Peace in the world. The light on the faces of the people reflects the great light and hope in Angelou's words:
''Peace. We look at our world and speak the word aloud.
Peace. We look at each other, then into ourselves. And we say, without shyness or apology or hesitation: Peace, My Brother. Peace, My Sister. Peace, My Soul.''
There is an accompanying CD with Maya Angelou reading the poem aloud. This adds a tremendous richness to an already wonderful offering. A perfect gift for friends and family alike. While this is a picture book, the sophistication of the poetry makes it best suited to older youth and adults rather than small children.
