How to describe this book? It has so many layers and complex characters that you'll remember it for the rest of your life. At least that is the effect it had on me. The three main characters are April, a stripper and the mother of a three-year-old; Bassam, a strange and shady foreigner; and AJ, a lonely and angry drunk who has made the mistake of falling in love with a stripper and thinking she loves him back. The novel takes place in the days and weeks leading up to September 11th and is set in the seamy underside of American life right before our country was changed forever. On the surface these characters are pretty easy to judge and disregard as losers, but that is where the layers of complexity come in.
