How to Have Your Garden and Eat It, Too
Alys Fowler
Illustrated by Elizabeth Rice|getty

Alys Fowler is to gardening what Julia Child was/is to cooking. Whether you've never planted anything in your life or you're a seasoned gardener, you will greatly benefit from her comprehensive book. It's unlike any gardening book I've ever read, and I used to be a gardening book hoarder!

What I love most is that the author takes all the intimidation and mystique out of getting it ''right.''

Growing in straight lines hasn't always been the norm, and there are major benefits to letting go of some of the formalities of traditional growing. Alys shares a better way, and as you read her words, you feel as if you're spending time with a dear friend -- a young, hip friend who just happens to be a world class authority on creating bountiful gardens! She knows how to make plants happy, and she arms you with the basics so you can start to plot and plan meals from your garden.

You'll learn how to create beautifully productive gardens that weave together flowers, fruits, and vegetables, mimicking nature so that you'll no longer be battling pests, exhausting your soil, or dealing with 46 heads of lettuce all maturing at the same time. Alys gets a meal a day with what she considers little effort, and you'll be able to do this too. She also included many of her favorite recipes, from Minestrone to Blackberry Whiskey.

Everything you could possibly need is in this book, helping you to make the most of whatever space you have. As chemically-intensive and corporate-dominated farming methods such as GMOs and monoculture-based crops become the norm, turning to natural and organic gardening is more important than ever. It's vastly cheaper too. This author knows how to make the journey rewarding and fun.
