I never thought I would ever get more compliments on a piece of jewelry than I have for the splurge-of-the-year Peruvian Opal strand I bought some time back, but this Pagdis Fabric Bracelet now holds that honor. Let me just say that wearing it is not something you want to do if you wish to fade into your surroundings or if you might get tired of saying ''Thank you!'' each time someone compliments it.
Made by a women's cooperative in a drought-prone region of India, the bracelet is a collection of small beads created with fabric scraps, then covered with block-printed fabric traditionally used to make pagdis (turbans) in western India, and then hand-embroidered with a running embroidery stitch called Tanka. This is a detailed and time-consuming process that can take up to 4 hours to make, a process during which each woman puts a little of herself into the piece she is creating.
You can dress the Pagdis Fabric Bracelet up or down, but either way, it makes a statement. And in your heart, you'll know that you are making a statement about supporting the efforts of a group of women working hard to better their lives and lives of their families.
The exact colors and patterns of the beads may vary from what is shown. The bracelets are on stretchy cords and will fit most wrists.
