Every summer on San Juan Island in the Pacific Northwest, the locals put on a Shakespearean play, inviting actors from New York or Los Angeles to participate. Single mother Jenny Alexander and her two teen-aged daughters, Lilly and Frankie, all receive parts in The Tempest. Little do they know how their participation will change them, nor how the power of Shakespeare's dramatic play will reflect their own lives. Their island story mirrors aspects of The Tempest in clever ways, and it's fun to draw the parallels to contemporary times.
The book is also about the tangled relationships mothers and daughters can have and the challenges girls can face growing up without a father.
