I recently had lunch with an old friend who's been through a lot –- good and bad -- since I last saw him 5 years ago. At some point, talk turned to ''gratitude.'' Not in an airy way, but in a grounded ''yeah, some lousy stuff has happened, but honestly, there's much to be thankful for'' way. He told me that every night he tries to write down a handful of things he's grateful for just to bring him back to center. Sometimes several days go by when he doesn't get around to it, but he said that when he resumes, without fail, ''everything shifts.''
Because everything really does shift when you find gratitude, we bring you these beads -- for which everyone involved can be thankful. Made by women in Uganda of 100% recycled newspaper and bark cloth, the necklaces are a project of Under One Sun (www.mushana.com.), a program that empowers women financially and helps to build sustainable communities. These beautiful beads connect you with someone you've never met whose family can eat today because of you. Pretty powerful, eh?
