As I write this, I am wearing a Red Spice Silk Scarf. Before starting to type, I paused to consider the wonderful qualities these scarves offer. They are much, much more than a beautiful accessory. Wearing it, I sense that its very creation has made the world a better place – not something I can say about most of the things I wear.
Woven by women of the Bodo tribe in India, the silk, which is called Eri, Vegetarian, or Peace Silk, is also the product of cocoon rearers and yarn makers in a Fair Trade partnership with low income and socially disadvantaged artisans, with a special focus on women. Eri is spun from vacant cocoons, after the worm has metamorphosed into a moth. (So no silkworms were harmed in the making of this silk!) This process makes for a greater degree of fiber purity and better yarn luster. Dyed with eco-friendly dyes, an Eri Scarf takes as many as 3 days to make, and each step supports an artisan livelihood. Along the way, crucial support is offered to the artisan family, ensuring fair wages and providing a platform for women to come together in an empowered way.
The Eri Silk Scarves are more than scarves. They are an investment toward a sustainable livelihood for those working tirelessly to create more humanity and more beauty in their own lives, as well as ours. And it's not often we get to wear our ''investments'' and be reminded of the good things that have come together because of the commitment of so many. (These measure approximately 60'' x 12'', but because they are handmade, size may vary slightly.) 100% Silk. Imported from India.
